Classification of Ronghua(Velvet Flower) - Velvet Ball Style

Ronghua(Velvet Flowers) are mainly divided into four major categories: velvet ball style, thick velvet strip style, thin velvet strip style, and flat clamp style. These four major categories are further divided into several subcategories.

Usually, artists will use multiple techniques according to their needs in a work, and will freely adjust according to the shape of the work. The techniques of these four major categories in the combing and twisting stages are similar, and detailed tutorials have been introduced in previous articles, so they will not be repeated here. The techniques after twisting are different for each category, so our later tutorials will be separated.

The velvet ball style is made of raw silk thread. Because the raw silk thread has a harder texture, the velvet balls made are more three-dimensional and not easy to deform. Velvet balls are usually used to make the bodies of birds and beasts, drama headdresses, persimmons, peaches, and other round fruits. Below are some examples:

1.Example One: Bird and Loquat
 

In the above picture, the body of the bird and the loquat fruit use the velvet ball style technique (the material is raw silk), the bird’s wings use the thin velvet strip technique (the material is Suzhou embroidery thread), and the bird’s tail uses the flat velvet strip technique (the material is Suzhou embroidery thread).

2. Example Two: Bird

In the above picture, the body of the bird uses the velvet ball style technique (the material is raw silk), and the wings and tail use the flat clamp style technique (the material is Hunan embroidery thread).

3. Example Three: Panda

In the above picture, the body, limbs, and ears of the panda use the velvet ball style technique (the material is raw silk), and the bamboo leaves use the flat clamp style technique (the material is Hunan embroidery thread).

4. Example Four: Opera Headdress

In the above picture, the red velvet ball uses the velvet ball style technique (the material is raw silk).

5. Example Five: Persimmon

In the above picture, the persimmon uses the velvet ball style technique (the material is raw silk), the leaf with wormholes uses the flat clamp style technique (the material is Hunan embroidery thread), and the wormhole in the leaf uses the common burning technique in the flat clamp style Ronghua(Velvet Flower).

6. Example Six: Peach

In the above picture, the peach uses the velvet ball style technique (the material is raw silk), and the leaves use the thin velvet strip technique (Suzhou embroidery thread).
