2.5 Chanhua Thread Joining / Two-Color Petal Making Tips

When making Chanhua, occasionally the thread length may be insufficient to complete wrapping an entire petal. In this situation, we can use thread joining techniques to add another thread and finish wrapping the petal. Below, two different colored threads will be used to demonstrate joining, making the technique more visually clear. The same joining technique can also be used to create two-color or even multi-color petals.

1. Wrap the cardstock template with one color of thread until reaching the point where joining is needed.

2. Turn the cardstock over to the back side and bend the copper wire upward.

3. Wrap the remaining thread around the copper wire on the back side.

4. Secure the thread with white glue, then cut off any excess thread once fixed.

5. Fold another thread in half and loop it onto the copper wire.

6. Pull the thread to the joining position, then straighten and smooth it flat.

7. Turn back to the front side and begin wrapping, maintaining moderate tension to avoid bending the copper wire out of shape.

8. While wrapping, pay attention to the connection point between front and back sides, ensuring a natural transition.

9. After wrapping the entire cardstock template, the joined/two-color petal is complete. This same technique can be used to create other petal shapes as well.
