3.1.4 How to Deal with the Thread Wrapping at the beginning

Q: What are the requirements for thread wrapping?
A: In both petal arrangement and the overall construction of a floral piece, the smoothness and aesthetic appeal of the wrapped threads are of paramount importance. Do not overlook the critical role of thread wrapping while focusing excessively on the brilliance of the flower form. During wrapping, strive for smooth, fluid lines, avoiding visible knots or damage to the silk threads.

Steps for Beginning Thread Wrapping

01. Take a copper rod as the main body for demonstration. Cut a silk thread from the spool to a moderate length, typically around 90cm (not a fixed quantity; can be adjusted according to preference). The thread should not be too short or too long. A thread that's too short may require splicing during wrapping, while a thread that's too long may become tangled.

02. Place the front 3cm of the silk thread against the copper rod, parallel to it. Press down tightly at the starting point with the thumb and forefinger of your left hand.

03. While keeping the left hand pressed down, use your right hand to pull the thread and wrap it downwards along the rod from the starting point. (While wrapping, learn to release tension with the right hand to prevent the thread from twisting.) Finish by securing the end at the bottom.

Thread Wrapping with a Loop

Q: Is the looping step essential?
A: No. This step is only to enhance the refinement of the piece. It can be omitted if considered troublesome.

Steps for Thread Wrapping with a Loop

01. Take one piece of 0.3mm stainless steel wire approximately 55cm long and one silk thread about 90cm long.

02. Begin wrapping the thread from the middle of the steel wire. Fold the wrapped section in half.

03. Flatten the folded section with pliers. Continue wrapping downwards for about 23cm (a commonly used length is around 23cm), then finish securing the end.

04. The color is not limited to green; various colors can be used.
