3.5 Chanhua Segmented Wing Wrapping Technique

This technique is used when the ends of the templates do not meet at the same point. It is good for making wings, segmented leaves, and shaped petals.

1. Arrange the wing templates in order. Use a pen to mark where the end of each template connects to the next one.

2. Take the bottom template. Wrap it completely as usual. Apply white glue to finish the end. Set it aside for later.

3. Take the second template from the bottom. Start wrapping from the inner corner and stop at the marked spot.

4. At the marked spot, add the petal you made in step 2. Align the tip of that petal with the mark. Pull the copper wire end of that petal to the back of the unwrapped part of the current template. Continue wrapping until the end. Use white glue to secure the end.

5. Make sure the wrapped petals are fully attached to each other. The front and back should look like the pictures shown.

6. Repeat steps 3-4 to wrap the next two templates above. Your wing petals are now complete.

7. Take a piece of copper wire. Use thread to wrap the petal shown in the left picture.

8. Attach this wrapped petal to the wing petals you just made. Bring the copper wires together and wrap the thread around them twice to secure.

9. Add the last template and wrap it with thread. After wrapping, bend the petal into place. Use the remaining thread to wrap and secure all the copper wires together to finish.

10. Your segmented wing is now complete.
