5.5 How to make a Temple Hair Flower

This example does not have a specific floral theme; it is purely an abstract expression of a flower. The red and blue color combination is both classic and retains a vintage charm.

Production Steps

Text in image: Group numbers are combined here; two groups are treated as one.

01 Arrange the velvet rows for the flowers and leaves according to the colors shown in the diagram.

  • Red velvet row: 13 thread groups, velvet row width 4.5cm, brass wire spacing 6mm.
  • Blue velvet row: 12 thread groups, velvet row width 4.5cm, brass wire spacing 1.2cm.

02 Make 48 red velvet strips. Trim the velvet strips into the shapes shown. Taper both ends on half of them, and taper the middle on the other half.

03 Roll up the strips tapered at both ends and fold them in half. Cut the strips tapered in the middle directly in half. Assemble and adhere them according to the positions demonstrated in the picture.

04 After adhesion is complete, flatten, set the shape, and trim it. The basic outline of the red flower piece is now complete.

05 Use a flower ironing tool to create an inwardly concave contour on the petals.

06 The front and back shapes of the ironed petals are as shown.

07 Assemble the pearls with the brass flower stamens.

08 When assembling the flower pieces, keep the base of the pieces 2-3mm from the stamens. Assemble 3 flower pieces on the first layer with the petal fronts facing up.

09 Assemble 5 flower pieces on the second layer with the petal backs facing up.

10 After the flower pieces are assembled, a flower calyx can be added at the bottom.

11 Mix hairspray with glitter and apply it to the surface of the flower. (Glitter can also be mixed in when setting the petal shape.)

12 For the velvet strips for the leaves, first shape them and then flatten and set the shape in one direction. Adhere two pieces together as a set, following the lotus leaf adhesion method.

13 Use the wire inlay template to create the leaf contour. First adhere the outer contour.

14 Then create the shape of the inner contour and adhere it.

15 Pass it through the pressing plate to create an arc, and use scissors to cut away excess velvet fabric.

16 The quantity and sizes of leaves used for one flower are as shown.

Text in image: 2~3mm small pearls.

17 Prepare the metal accessories and pearls.

18 Assemble the pearls and leaf pieces as shown.

19 Mix hairspray with glitter and apply it to the surface of the leaves. (Glitter can also be mixed in when setting the leaf shape.)

20 During assembly, use one set of leaves as the starting point. Wrap downwards for 1.4cm, then add a flower.

21 Immediately assemble the next flower and set of leaves.

22 Continue assembling the two sets of flowers and leaves according to the data in the diagram. (Diagram data is for reference only, not fixed values. Readers can adjust appropriately based on their own habits.)

23 Assemble the final flower and set of leaves.

24 Assemble the components made in steps 22 and 23 together.

25 Combine with the hairpin.

26 The Temple Hair Flower is now complete.
