3.1.3 Dyeing a Color-Changing Set
Share

01. Soak the silk threads in advance. Select two dye colors for dyeing: Goose Yellow and Stone Blue.
02. Add 55 scoops of dye (using a standard ear scoop) to a measuring cup, then pour in 550mL of boiling water to dissolve the dye, creating the dye stock solution.
(Image note: 55 scoops of Goose Yellow dye dissolved in 550mL boiling water; 55 scoops of Stone Blue dye dissolved in 550mL boiling water.)

03. For the first set of threads, add 1L of warm water to a basin, then inject 95mL of the Goose Yellow stock solution and 5mL of the Stone Blue stock solution. After the two colors are completely mixed, immerse the silk threads for dyeing. Dip and agitate for 2 minutes, then remove, rinse, and wring dry.

04. For the second set of threads, add 1L of warm water to a basin, then inject 90mL of the Goose Yellow stock solution and 10mL of the Stone Blue stock solution for dyeing.

05. For the third set of threads, add 1L of warm water to a basin, then inject 80mL of the Goose Yellow stock solution and 20mL of the Stone Blue stock solution for dyeing.

06. For the fourth set of threads, add 1L of warm water to a basin, then inject 70mL of the Goose Yellow stock solution and 30mL of the Stone Blue stock solution.
(Note the pattern: while keeping the total volume of injected dye stock solution constant at 100mL, vary the proportions of the two solutions to achieve a different color for each set of threads.)

07. The ratios for the fifth to eleventh sets are as follows:
- Fifth set: 1L warm water + 60mL Goose Yellow stock + 40mL Stone Blue stock.
- Sixth set: 1L warm water + 50mL Goose Yellow stock + 50mL Stone Blue stock.
- Seventh set: 1L warm water + 40mL Goose Yellow stock + 60mL Stone Blue stock.
- Eighth set: 1L warm water + 30mL Goose Yellow stock + 70mL Stone Blue stock.
- Ninth set: 1L warm water + 20mL Goose Yellow stock + 80mL Stone Blue stock.
- Tenth set: 1L warm water + 10mL Goose Yellow stock + 90mL Stone Blue stock.
- Eleventh set: 1L warm water + 5mL Goose Yellow stock + 95mL Stone Blue stock.

08. The color progression of the eleven-set color-changing set is as shown in the image.

(Note: Label on the diagram above: Use 1L of warm water for all 11 sets during dyeing.)

Summary: The core concept of dyeing a color-changing set lies in adjusting the ratio of two dye stock solutions to achieve a unique effect where each set of threads has a distinct yet related color. Once you grasp this principle, you can freely adjust the proportions and fully enjoy the fun and creativity of the dyeing process.
Tips:
① Wear rubber gloves during dyeing to prevent staining your hands.
② Different dye brands have varying concentrations. Adjust the amount used according to the dye you purchase; it doesn't need to be exactly the same as the author's. Understanding the dyeing principle is key.
Dyeing and Color Palette Reference
01. Spring Romance: Pink + Green + Yellow + Red palette, suitable for delicate flower shapes like peach blossoms or cherry blossoms.
02. A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains: Inspired by the famous Song Dynasty painting "A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains," composed of yellow, green, and blue. This brighter palette is suitable for fluffy chrysanthemum styles or flattened flower types.
03. HeheMeimei: A set transitioning from red to purple with lower color saturation, suitable for larger, richly colored flowers like peonies or roses.
