Ronghua, or velvet flowers, is a biomimetic floral adornment traditionally known as "Palace Flowers" or "Auspicious Flowers." Artisans skillfully blend mulberry silk with metals like brass or silver wire, meticulously trimming them to shape. It is celebrated not only for its opulent, luxurious, and magnificent appearance but also for its auspicious symbolism derived from its homophone "ronghua" (荣华, prosperity and splendor). This has made it a beloved ornament across all social strata, from nobility to commoners.
The crafting process of Ronghua is intricate and refined. Even a seemingly insignificant single flower involves over a dozen complex steps. With its lifelike, almost deceptively real artistry, Ronghua transcends the constraints of seasons and time, allowing floral beauty to eternally bloom in one's hair—radiant and never fading.
This book crystallizes the author's years of teaching experience and embodies a deep understanding of this traditional craft. It explores floral aesthetics and experiments with techniques, and while it may have imperfections, it serves adequately as an introductory guide for beginners venturing into the world of Ronghua making. The author sincerely hopes this book will aid those eager to learn and welcomes valuable critiques and suggestions from peers to collectively promote the heritage and development of Ronghua art.
The completion of this book was neither instantaneous nor a solitary effort. Special gratitude is extended to Teacher Cai Zhiwei for his meticulous guidance and invaluable advice on the chapter "Traditional Ronghua Crafting Process." Deep appreciation also goes to: friend Qinghe for contributions in literature and data compilation; assistant Yile for unique insights on dyeing techniques; the dedicated knife sharpener; friend Guangyue for careful manuscript review; Xiaolin Attire for their full support; and all the talented artisans who generously provided exquisite photographs of their work. May our traditional handicrafts spread farther and thrive with renewed vitality in this digital media and information age.
