4.1.1 Basic Leaf Styles - Common Long Leaf - Bonding Technique for Two to Three Thick Velvet Strips

Common Long Leaf - Bonding Technique for Two to Three Thick Velvet Strips

(Using Velvet Bamboo Leaf as an example, applicable to bamboo leaves and other slender leaves)

Key Summary

  • Try to shape the velvet strips to be as smooth and even as possible.
  • Apply glue evenly at the bonding point; avoid using too much.
  • After bonding, ensure no gaps appear between the velvet strips; join them tightly.

Production Steps

01. Prepare 7 sets of Suzhou Embroidery Untwisted Mulberry Silk Thread (no splitting required). The velvet row width is 3.5cm, with brass wire spacing of 3-4mm. Use 0.2mm annealed brass wire to make the velvet strips.

02. Taper and shape 27 velvet strips: 6 strips to 3mm thickness, 21 strips to 2mm thickness.

03. First, take two 3mm thick velvet strips as a group and twist them together at the base.

04. Apply glue.

05. Pull the brass wire ends to merge and bond the velvet strips together.

06. Cut off the brass wire ends. One two-strip bonded leaf is complete. Make 3 leaves of this type.

07. Prepare three 2mm thick velvet strips. Again, twist them together at the base for fixation, but note: the middle strip should be slightly higher, with the two side strips symmetrically distributed and slightly lower. The height difference between the middle and side strips should not exceed 2mm.

08. After twisting and fixing, add a 0.3mm stainless steel wire at the base for support and bind it with thread.

09. Cut off the excess brass wire at the top of each strip one by one.

10. Using the middle strip as the axis of symmetry, bring the two side strips close to it. You can use tweezers to gently scrape a curve into the side strips so they merge smoothly with the middle strip. (Only scrape the sides, not the middle.)

11. Apply glue to the bonding area. After confirming it's correct, bring the strips together and bond firmly. Make 7 leaves of this type.

12. Confirm the number of bonded leaves is ready, then prepare for assembly.

13. Arrange and combine the two types of leaves according to the position and spacing shown in the diagram to create four large leaf clusters. (The data labeled in the image refers to petiole length.)

 (Image Text: Add wire here)

14. Using Cluster No. 1 as an example, demonstrate making a bamboo node. At the lowest assembly point of the third leaf, add a piece of 0.3mm color-preserving copper wire, wrapping and embedding it into the stem.

15. Wrap the silk thread down 0.5cm, then bend the copper wire out and wrap it around the stem 5 times, pressing it down.

16. After wrapping 5 times, bend the copper wire back in and continue wrapping the stem with silk thread, covering another 0.5cm length.

17. Repeat this step to make three bamboo nodes.

18. Perform this treatment on all 4 leaf clusters. Specific measurements can be referenced in the image. *(The data labeled in the image refers to bamboo node spacing.)*

19. Assemble the 4 leaf clusters together in pairs according to the position and spacing shown in the image.

(Image Text: Bend downward; All bent downward; Two major groups bent back completed)

20. You can use tweezers to bend the leaves downward at the assembly points for better three-dimensional effect. Also, use tweezers to gently pinch a curve into the leaves if desired.

21. The two large leaf groups can be bent overall to the left to create a curve. Adjust the position for final combination.

22. Prepare one imitation Taihu Lake stone and a hairpin base.

(Image Text: There are two fixing points in total, upper and lower)

23. After assembling the bamboo leaves overall with the hairpin, add a binding wire at the very bottom.

24. Use the binding wire to secure the Taihu Lake stone. You can wrap multiple times around the same fixing point.

25. Apply glue to parts of some leaves and sprinkle on snow powder. (Non-essential step; can be omitted if snow powder is unavailable.)

26. Production complete. See the finished Ronghua bamboo leaves video: https://youtu.be/GFoyTDKTFJc
