5.1 How to Make Chanhua Maple Leaves and a Moth

1.  Wrap silk threads around a 0.6mm copper wire for about 1cm.

2.  Thread a 3-6mm copper bead onto the wrapped part, then fold the copper wire in half and continue wrapping with the thread.

3.  Wrap the thread down to about 2-3cm on the stem to finish. Use the same method to make several beaded stems and set them aside.

4.  Combine two beaded stems together, wrap and secure them. Then place them above a pre-made maple leaf and continue wrapping to attach. (Refer to the petal connecting technique for making the leaf.)

5.  Wrap the maple leaf stem to about 5-6cm in length and finish. Use the same method to make several maple leaves of different sizes and set them aside.

6.  Use 0.6mm copper wire to make two small branches, then combine them and wrap a short section.

7.  Add one small maple leaf and continue wrapping to secure it.

8.  Add a slightly larger maple leaf, secure it, and set this piece aside for assembly.

9.  Repeat steps 6-8 to make and assemble the other half of the branch.

10. Add a third maple leaf to form a triangular arrangement. Finish the stem normally and set it aside for final assembly.

11. Prepare the moth wings using the separate wing wrapping technique. Get chenille stems, 2mm copper beads, and a piece of 0.3mm tarnish-resistant copper wire.

12. Use jewelry glue to stick the 2mm copper beads onto both sides of a chenille stem to make the moth's eyes.

13. Fold the 0.3mm copper wire in half, place it against the two wings, and wrap with thread to assemble and secure them.

14. Use wire cutters to trim the excess copper wire from the chenille stem.

15. Use jewelry glue to attach the finished moth body onto the wings.

16. Adjust the shape and get it ready for assembly.

17. Prepare the two maple leaf branches and the moth.

18. Place the smaller maple leaf branch at the front and the larger branch at the back. Wrap them together with thread to secure.

19. Add the finished moth in a suitable position. Then wrap a little more on the stem to prepare for attaching it to the main comb later.

20. Bend a small section of the stem back and wrap over it with thread to secure.

21. Take the main hair comb base. Place the finished Chanhua maple leaves with the back facing up. Lay the stems against the top of the comb and wrap with thread to secure.

22. Wrap the thread around the comb teeth a few times to secure it. Then, add a piece of copper wire to prepare for an invisible finish.

23. Continue wrapping the thread around the comb teeth until the Chanhua piece feels secure and doesn't wobble.

24. Pass the thread through the copper wire loop and pull it back to create an invisible finish. (Refer to the invisible finishing technique for details.)

25. Use shaping pliers to gently curve the whole Chanhua piece toward the other end of the comb.

26. Use pearlescent solid watercolors to paint patterns on the moth. Your artwork is now complete.
