5.6 How to Make a Chanhua Butterfly

1. Prepare one piece of 0.3mm thick frosted PVC, a ruler, a silver metallic paint pen, and a checkerboard pattern diagram.

2. The PVC sheet has one smooth side and one frosted side. Use the frosted side for drawing.

3. Place the PVC sheet over the checkerboard pattern diagram. Use the ruler and metallic paint pen to trace the checkerboard shape. After drawing each line, pause for a few seconds to let the ink dry before drawing the next line, to avoid smudging the parts you have already drawn.

4. Cut out the drawn checkerboard with scissors and trim it into shape. Seal it with a layer of UV glue and cure it. (Note: If you don't have UV glue and tools, you can skip this sealing step.)

5. Prepare several black agate cabochons and white agate cabochons, 4mm in diameter, to use as game pieces.

6. Apply jewelry glue in dots onto the finished checkerboard. Place and fix the game pieces according to the pattern diagram. (Note: You can also arrange them in other layouts according to your personal preference.)

7. The checkerboard part is now complete.

8. Wrap the butterfly wing pieces with black silk threads and set them aside.

9. Thread a piece of 0.4mm diameter color-protected copper wire through a red agate barrel bead, then fold it in half.

10. Wrap red silk threads around a 0.3mm diameter copper wire for about 3cm.

11. Wrap this prepared copper wire piece twice around the red agate barrel bead, then bring the ends of the copper wire together.

12. Add the prepared butterfly wing pieces one by one, using the red silk threads to fix and assemble them.

13. Prepare two pieces of 0.3mm diameter color-protected copper wire and fix them to the front of the butterfly to serve as antennae.

14. Use cutting pliers to trim away any excess copper wire.

15. Apply jewelry glue to the tips of the antennae and glue on two 2mm diameter red agate beads for decoration.

16. Use the same method to make another white butterfly.

17. Finish the ends of the two butterflies using an invisible finishing technique.

18. Bend the finished ends ninety degrees using shaping pliers, then apply jewelry glue.

19. Glue the two butterflies onto the checkerboard as shown in the picture.

20. Prepare a longer piece of 0.4mm diameter copper wire. Use red silk threads to wrap a small section in the middle, then fold the copper wire in half, and continue wrapping downwards.

21. After wrapping down to the middle part of the copper wire, separate the two ends. Wrap only one end, and thread a red bean (Job's tears seed) onto the other end.

22. Bring the copper wire ends back together and continue wrapping to the very end.

23. Bend this wrapped wire piece into an "S" shape. Wrap its two ends around the bases of the two fixed butterflies.

24. Turn it to the front and adjust the shape.

25. Use a ball head pin to go through a long teardrop-shaped agate bead, secure it, and set it aside.

26. Thread two 3mm diameter copper beads and one red agate cylindrical bead onto a headpin. Then use round nose pliers to bend the end back, closing it.

27. Connect the two parts made in the previous steps. Then add another headpin with a 3mm bead on it to create a tassel pendant.

28. Hang the finished tassel pendant onto the red thread position and squeeze the ring closed to secure it.

29. The Chanhua "Acacia Yearning" piece is now complete.
