6.5 How to make a Ronghua Chrysanthemum

The chrysanthemum possesses the remarkable effect of "nourishing one's nature as a superior medicine, capable of lightening the body and prolonging life," and is honored as the "longevity guest." People cleverly combine chrysanthemums with phonetically harmonious flowers, plants, objects, and characters to create "auspicious saying" patterns rich in meaning, used to decorate life and pray for the arrival of happiness and longevity.

Production Steps

01 Arrange the velvet row colors according to the diagram. The data from left to right is as follows:

  • a: Quantity 7 sets, velvet row width 3.3cm, wire spacing 3mm;
  • b: Quantity 12 sets, velvet row width 4.5cm, wire spacing 3mm;
  • c: Quantity 15 sets, velvet row width 5cm, wire spacing 4mm;
  • d: Quantity 17 sets, velvet row width 6cm, wire spacing 4mm.

02 Trim the four types of velvet strips (a, b, c, d) into the shapes and quantities shown.

03 Group three each of the b, c, and d velvet strips together and twist them at the base for easier assembly.

04 Make an additional 5 sets of d velvet strips and wrap the base with silk thread.

05 Take 11 a velvet strips, bind them closed at top and bottom to form a spherical shape.

06 Add 7 sets of b velvet strips.

07 Cut off the excess wire sequentially.

08 Use tweezers to curve the velvet strips, making them curve inward.

09 Then add 8 sets of c velvet strips.

10 After sequentially cutting off the wire, shape them with tweezers.

11 Then add 9 sets of d velvet strips, plus one additional single d strip to make the overall shape fuller. This means the fourth layer receives 28 strips total.

12 Shape the velvet strips sequentially.

13 For the final layer, place the d velvet strips pre-wrapped with thread. They can be extended outward by 1.6~1.7cm (distance indicated by tweezers in the image) to visually create the effect of longer strips.

14 Shape the velvet strips sequentially.

15 Following the method in step 05, use 14 a velvet strips to make another flower bud.

16 Place 5 sets of b velvet strips around the bud.

17 Then add 5 sets of c velvet strips to the outer layer, shaping them sequentially.

18 The two chrysanthemum flowers are complete.

19 The velvet row color arrangement for chrysanthemum leaves is as shown: Quantity 10 sets, velvet row width 4cm, wire spacing 0.3~0.4cm.

(Text in image: Please note the strip spacing)

20 The spacing data for arranging the velvet strips of the small chrysanthemum leaf is as shown in the left diagram.

21 The spacing data for arranging the velvet strips of the large chrysanthemum leaf is as shown in the left diagram.

22 Combine 2 large leaves and 1 small leaf together.

23 After combining, wind down a distance (readers can adjust the length according to their situation), add a binding wire. After securing the binding wire, fold the stem back, wrapping the binding wire back in as well. The leaf and stem combination is complete.

24 First combine the small flower bud with one small leaf, then combine this with the large leaf made in the previous step.

25 Finally, position the main flower (the large leaf is now located at the upper left side).

26 Add the U-shaped hairpin body.

27 Adjust the position of the large leaf, moving it from the upper left side, through the area between the main flower and the bud, to the lower right side.

28 After adjusting the position, you can appropriately use tweezers to smooth the leaf's curve for a more natural look.

29 The entire floral form is complete.
