How to prevent thread slipping when making Chanhua

Slipping thread is a common challenge during making Chanhua. Here are effective methods to solve it completely.

1. Use Double-Sided Adhesive Back

  • Apply double-sided tape to the back of the paper template.
  • Peel off the backing when wrapping—the adhesive helps secure the thread and reduces slipping.
  • Note: This is only an aid for beginners and should not be relied on permanently. As you gain experience, you can phase out its use.

2. Apply Edge Sealant

  • After wrapping the petal, apply Edge Sealant solution and let it dry completely.
  • This fixes the thread in place and prevents slipping during handling.
  • Important: The petal must be neatly wrapped before application—the solution will not fix an already slipped thread.

3. Choose Specialized Wrapping Thread

  • Use thread specifically designed for silk wrapping - Velvet Threads.
  • Velvet Threads are composed of multiple fine strands, offering better grip and reducing slip.
  • Keep the thread flat while wrapping to minimize slipping and visible lines.
  • Natural Mulberry Silk Threads are also an option, though they tend to slip more easily than Velvet Threads.

4. Master Wrapping Technique and Direction
Proper technique is the most important factor in preventing slipping.

a. Adjust Wrapping Direction

  • When wrapping petals with one straight edge and one curved/irregular edge, align the thread perpendicular to the curved edge, not the straight base.
  • Adjust the thread direction in real-time to maintain this perpendicular alignment.
  • Overlap the thread slightly on the inner edge to change the direction of thread and create a radial texture to improve hold, as shown in the picture below.

b. Maintain Proper Tension

  • Keep velvet thread taut but not overly tight—excessive tension can damage the paper and increase slipping, especially on slopes.

c. Keep Thread Flat

  • If the thread twists, gently twist it back with your fingers to restore a flat profile.

d. Skip and Back-Wrap Tricky Sections

  • For high-risk slipping areas, skip the section initially, then wrap back toward it from the opposite direction to secure difficult corners or turns, as shown in the picture below.

All these techniques are demonstrated in detail in the Chanhua DIY Kits tutorial videos.
